Fuel Efficiency Blog
The annual Smiths Falls Lions Club Pickle Fest was the place to be this September 11. Not only did One Change sample crispy dills, sweet pickles, tomato relish and plum butter, we also spread the word about our fuel efficiency campaign, and recruited one exceptional volunteer for our area Canadian Tire event.
Fifteen-year-old St. John Catholic High School student Liz Beckett (pictured here) may have come for the preserves. But as soon as she spotted the One Change booth at the Pickle Fest, she knew she’d found something worth making time for. Once Liz learned about our efforts to empower her community with the knowledge they need to make smart choices about the environment, she was eager to sign on as a volunteer.
“(One Change) is important because it helps the environment and others,” says Liz. Rather than spending October 30 preparing her Halloween costume, the generous teenager leant a hand at our Canadian Tire Smiths Falls event. She was a big hit with local shoppers, providing them with free digital tire gauges and explaining how people can quickly and easily check their tire pressure—not to mention save fuel and money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve road safety in the process.
Liz’s enthusiasm about energy efficiency was contagious. By the end of the day, she’d delivered 250 tire gauges, and impressed upon people the importance of maintaining proper tire pressure. “It has to do with helping the environment,” says Liz. “I got to spend the day helping people understand their tires better.”
Not only that, but Liz got a sneak peek into how she’ll maintain her own vehicle when the time comes. “(Volunteering with One Change) taught me a lot about how to make my car fuel efficient,” she says. There’s no doubt that when Liz does hit the road, she’ll do so with the well-being of the environment in mind.
