Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are the benefits of volunteering for One Change?
-
There are many benefits of volunteering with us. Not only are you helping the environment and getting people to change behaviour, but you can also do this on your own schedule and close to home. You can help as an individual, as a community group or as a family (a great way to introduce kids to volunteering). Volunteering is a way to improve your skills and can be counted towards required school volunteer hours. Most of all, volunteering for One Change is fun!
All volunteers will receive a free campaign t-shirt, volunteer certificate and are invited to an end-of-campaign celebration event.

What do One Change volunteers do?
-
In areas where we have an active campaign you can deliver free items door-to-door in your neighbourhood, attend one of our community events, or help out with administrative work at one of our offices.
If there are no active campaigns in your area, you can volunteer by sharing One Change messages with your family and friends through our “share a tip” section, posting One Change information on your website and social networks, and by sharing our e-newsletter with friends and family.
-
How do I register as an individual or a community group?
-
It’s easy. Simply fill out our “Volunteer Form.” A local Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator will be in touch with you soon to give you more information.
-
How can community groups help?
-
Community groups can help by sending One Change information to their members, posting One Change campaign information on their website, putting up a volunteer recruitment poster, helping out with door-to-door deliveries or at an event.
-
How does door-to-door delivery work?
-
One Change will give you a delivery bag full of campaign specific delivery items like CFL lightbulbs or digital tire gauges, a suggested script containing important campaign messages, a map of designated houses, and a recording sheet. You are usually given delivery points in your own neighborhood. You will be asked to record which houses you delivered to and return this information along with the delivery bag to a One Change representative once you have delivered all your items. If you have undelivered items these need to be returned with the bag.
-
What if a house appears unsafe?
-
Just skip it. One Change prides itself on keeping its volunteers and the people they serve safe. While we’re happy to report we haven’t had an unpleasant incident yet, we always ask our volunteers to keep safety top-of-mind when delivering. Local Volunteer & Outreach Coordinators will provide you with more safety tips once you register.
-
What is a community event?
-
Community events generally take place at a fair, sports centre, community centre or retail location. Volunteers help give out items, share One Change messages and assist with set-up and tear-down.
-
How do I volunteer to help administrative work at a One Change office?
-
Simply fill out the “Volunteer Form” and a local Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator will be in touch with you to discuss these opportunities.
-
Am I qualified to volunteer for One Change?
-
Yes! Volunteering for One Change is easy and no special skills are required. A One Change representative will provide you with training at an orientation or individually. You will be given a script to use for deliveries and at events. The only requirement is that you be friendly, follow our messaging and report the exact number of items that you give out.
-
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
-
We accept volunteers of any age. However, volunteers under 18 years of age must have a signed permission form from their guardian. Children 12 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult and, for door-to-door deliveries, volunteers 15 years old and younger must deliver with a partner.
-
Does volunteering for One Change count towards required volunteer hours for
-
school?
-
Yes. One Change is a registered charity in Canada and the USA. We are happy to sign your forms after you have completed your shift.
-
Will volunteering take a lot of my time?
-
Not at all. When you volunteer for One Change, you make your own hours. That means if you can only help out at an event for a couple of hours, we'll work around your schedule. Door-to-door deliveries usually take about 2 hours to deliver 50 items but you can deliver at your own pace and at your own convenience.
-
Can I volunteer with someone else?
-
Yes. In fact we encourage people to go door-to-door or attend an event with a partner. Lots of our volunteers like to make delivery a family activity.
-
How do I dress for volunteering?
-
All One Change volunteers are asked to wear a One Change t-shirt and volunteer button which will be provided to you. For deliveries you will be given an official bag for your items. Depending on the time of year you may be given additional items to wear. The main thing is to dress comfortably and for the weather.
-
Am I expected to show up for the event shifts that I’ve signed-up for?
-
Yes! The shifts you have signed up for are the ones we expect you to complete. Please be sure to commit to the shifts you have signed up for. If you are not able to make it to a shift, just let us know in advance.
-
What if I need to break my volunteering commitment to One Change or I don’t like
-
my volunteer role?
-
Don’t sweat it. Circumstances change and we understand, but please contact your local Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator to let us know.
-
Can I get a letter of reference for volunteering?
-
By volunteering for One Change you can request a letter of reference. All volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation at the end of the campaign.
-
Do you have a volunteer appreciation event?
-
Yes! At the end of every campaign, we hold a volunteer celebration event for our volunteers. Usually there is free food, fun games and a chance to win prizes.
